A personalised approach to learning

The Early Years Foundation stage is a single quality framework encompassing children from birth through to 5 years.  It came into practise in September 2008.  The Foundation stage runs through all the Early Years Provisions and carries through to the end of the Reception Year at school.

The Early Years Foundation takes as its starting point the five outcomes set out in “Every Child Matters” and the Children’s Act 2004:

  • Be Healthy

  • Stay Safe

  • Enjoy and Achieve

  • Make a Positive Contribution

  • Achieve Economic Well-Being

A personalised approach to learning is advocated alongside a commitment to work closely with families will maximise individual children’s progression through well-planned play based on the interests and developmental need of each child.

Learning Journals

Every child’s achievements are recorded in ‘Learning Journals’ which are used as tools to plan for their individual needs.  Parents and children are invited to contribute to journals regularly to maximise its effectiveness.

Key persons are responsible for the Learning Journals and liaise with parents/carers at regular intervals to keep information current.  The Learning Journals are available to parents/carers on request and with permission are passed onto their new Reception class teacher for continuation.  In most cases once the Reception Teacher has recorded our most current observations on your child they will be returned to the parents/carer to keep.

The headings under which we observe the children and base our curriculum on are:

  • P.S.E. – Personal, Social and Emotional Development

  • P.S.R.N. – Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy

  • C.L.L. – Communication, Language and Literacy

  • K & U – Knowledge and Understanding of the World

  • Physical

  • Creative
